Dandiya (Dance), which is originated in the state of “Gujarat” in India. Dandiya is the most popular dance of all states throughout India not only for Gujarat. It is a special feature of the Navaratri Festival. Originally performed in honor of Goddess Durga, the dance form represents a battle between the demon Mahishasura and the Goddess. Another legend states that the dance form originated from Krishna & Radha’s ‘Raas Leela,’ hence the name ‘Dandiya Raas.’ Also, it was earlier performed only by men, who sometimes used swords instead of sticks in the dance performance. This Dandiya dance form is the staging of a fight between Goddess Durga and Mahishasura, the mighty demon-king. This dance is also nicknamed ‘The Folk Dance.’ The sticks of the dance represent the weapon of God Durga. The origin of these dances can be copied back to the life of Lord Krishna. Today, Raas is not only an essential part of Navaratri in Gujarat but extends itself to other festivals related to harvest and crops as well.
The special feature of Dandiya is colorful apparel worn by the dancers and colorful sticks carried by them. The wooden sticks are used as a prop and are beautifully decorated. Many traditional Dandiyas are performed around a central statue of the Goddess Durga. Historically, it is performed during the nine-day Hindu festival Navaratri. It is for this reason this dance also called Stick Dance.
